Cauliflower (Broccoli) Romanesco Natalino Seeds from Mr Fothergill's Seeds and Plants.
Crisp texture, slightly nutty.
Unusual spiral florets, crisp texture and distinctive flavour. Grow for baby heads to eat whole or as full size. Sometimes referred to as Broccoli.
You can have a fresh supply of tasty, nutritious 'caulis' all year round. Can be sown direct in the garden or started indoors.
Sow & Grow:
Outdoors: sow thinly, April-July, in a seed bed, 1.5cm (½") deep, directly into finely-prepared, well-cultivated, fertile soil, which has already been watered.
Seedlings usually appear in 14-28 days. Water well until plants are established. Transplant 45cm (18") apart, when plants are about 10cm (4") tall. Allow 60cm (2') between rows. For 'baby' heads, grow in blocks with 30cm (1') between plants. These can be sown in succession. Plant firmly and water well.
Or sow indoors, April-May, 0.5cm (¼") deep, in a tray of compost. Water well and place in a cold frame or unheated greenhouse. Keep moist. Transplant 5cm (2") apart to other trays, when large enough to handle.
Gradually accustom young plants to outside conditions (avoid frosts) before planting out, May-June, into well-cultivated, fertile soil.
Harvest: July-December.
Hints & Tips:
Feed young plants with a slow release fertiliser, as fast release fertilisers can cause unevenness in the crop.
